Samsung Engineer Honored with 3GPP Excellence Award for 4G and 5G Network Contributions
In a significant recognition of technical leadership, a key researcher at Samsung Research America has been honored for his foundational work on the cellular networks that power modern mobile connectivity. The award underscores the critical behind-the-scenes engineering that enables faster data speeds and more reliable service for billions of users worldwide.
Recognizing a Decade of Standardization Leadership
Dr. Eko Onggosanusi, a researcher within the Standards and Mobility Innovation Lab at Samsung Research America, is the recipient of the 2025 3GPP Excellence Award. This prestigious award is conferred by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), the global body responsible for developing the technical specifications for mobile telecommunications. It recognizes individuals for their outstanding contributions to the creation of next-generation telecommunication standards.
Dr. Onggosanusi was specifically cited for his contributions to 3GPP's RAN Working Group 1 (RAN1) and for his leadership in advancing Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology within the global standards community. MIMO is a sophisticated multi-antenna signal processing technique that is a core component of both 4G LTE and 5G New Radio (NR) networks. It is instrumental in improving data transfer rates, enhancing cellular network efficiency, and expanding coverage.
The MIMO Architect: Shaping 4G, 5G, and Beyond
Dr. Onggosanusi's award-winning work spans over a decade. After joining Samsung in 2014, he was appointed by 3GPP to lead the development of Full-Dimension MIMO (FD-MIMO) technology. He served as the 3GPP RAN MIMO rapporteur for six consecutive work items across multiple specification releases from 2014 to 2025. This sustained leadership was crucial in steering the complex, consensus-driven process of standardizing these advanced technologies, which have since been incorporated into commercial 4G and 5G networks globally.
In a statement, Dr. Onggosanusi expressed pride in contributing to Samsung's standardization efforts, noting the privilege of serving in RAN1. "My focus has been on fostering collaboration and consensus within the 3GPP community to develop state-of-the-art physical-layer technology and help shape the future of cellular standards," he said.
Samsung Research, part of Samsung Electronics' Device Experience division, has been a leader in the development and implementation of MIMO technology. The expertise honed through this standards work is not only vital for current networks but is also expected to play a key role in the foundational research for future 6G systems.
A Testament to Collaborative Innovation
The 3GPP Excellence Award highlights the importance of individual expertise within the larger, collaborative engine of global standardization. While consumer devices often capture the spotlight, the performance of these devices is fundamentally dependent on the robust network standards developed by engineers and researchers like Dr. Onggosanusi. His recognition serves as a reminder that the seamless connectivity experienced daily is built upon years of dedicated technical work and international cooperation aimed at pushing the boundaries of what mobile networks can achieve.
