Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Chip for High-End Phones
Qualcomm has expanded its flagship mobile processor lineup with the introduction of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, positioning it as a powerful alternative to the company's top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This new chipset brings substantial performance improvements while targeting the premium segment of the smartphone market.
Advanced 3nm Architecture and Performance
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 (SM8845) utilizes TSMC's advanced 3nm manufacturing process, matching the fabrication technology of its elite counterpart. The chip features a 2 + 6 CPU core configuration with two prime cores and six performance cores, all based on third-generation Oryon architecture. However, these components operate at slightly reduced clock speeds compared to the flagship model, with prime cores running at 3.8GHz and performance cores at 3.32GHz.
Performance metrics show significant generational improvements, with Qualcomm claiming 36% faster CPU performance, 11% better GPU performance, 46% enhanced AI processing capabilities, and 13% higher power efficiency compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 launched two years ago. The Adreno 840 GPU, while lacking the Adreno High-Performance Memory found in the elite version, still delivers robust gaming performance with dedicated hardware acceleration for ray-tracing, Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.1, HDR gaming support, and Snapdragon Game Super Resolution technology.
Enhanced AI and Imaging Capabilities
The chipset incorporates the latest Hexagon NPU for on-device multimodal AI processing, enabling advanced artificial intelligence applications directly on the device. The Spectra ISP features a triple 20-bit pipeline with AI-powered processing, supporting camera sensors up to 320MP resolution. It can capture images from three 48MP sensors simultaneously at 30fps with zero shutter lag, or handle a single 108MP sensor under the same conditions.
Video recording capabilities include 4K resolution at 120fps, though the chip omits 8K video recording support present in the elite variant. The imaging system supports 10-bit color depth and Rec. 2020 color gamut coverage for HDR content, along with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG video capture formats. It also accommodates Google's Ultra HDR format and Samsung's APV codec for professional-grade video capture and editing workflows.
Connectivity and Memory Features
The integrated X80 5G Modem-RF System supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks in Standalone and Non-Standalone modes, delivering peak download speeds up to 10Gbps and upload speeds up to 3.5Gbps. The modem enables dual-SIM dual-active 5G connectivity for enhanced network flexibility.
Additional connectivity options include multi-frequency GNSS positioning (BeiDou, Galileo, GPS, NavIC, and QZSS), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 with LE Audio support, UWB technology, and USB 3.1 Gen 2 with Type-C connectivity. The chip supports up to 24GB LPDDR5X DRAM at 4,800MHz speeds and UFS 4.1 storage, while display capabilities extend to 4K+ resolution at 120Hz refresh rates and QHD+ resolution at up to 240Hz.
Market Positioning and Availability
Qualcomm has confirmed that several major smartphone manufacturers will incorporate the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 in their upcoming devices. iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, and Vivo are among the brands expected to feature this chipset in their premium smartphone offerings in the coming months. While Samsung's adoption plans remain unconfirmed, industry speculation suggests the chip could potentially power future FE series devices such as the Galaxy S26 FE and Galaxy Z Flip 8 FE.
